By Catherine Butler, 3rd-year Sociology undergraduate.
At 20 years old there really is nothing like the feeling of dread that rushes over you when someone asks, ‘So what are you going to do after university?’
However, following an easy-going afternoon with a variety of local employers, many students left the Sociology programme’s ‘Meet the Employers’ event feeling more prepared and excited for their future careers.
The event took place in the heights of Augustine House, and featured organisations including Kent Police, The Medaille Trust, Pioneer and Beyond and HM Prison and Probation Services. Additionally, for those who just can’t let go of that university life, there were presentations from postgraduate courses offered at Canterbury Christ Church University such as; Criminal Justice, Social Work, PGCE, and a brand new Sociology MSc.
We started off the afternoon rotating in groups – rotating from employer to employer – and taking in as much as we could. Afterwards it was the perfect opportunity to speak directly to those involved in your desired career. No faffing, no searching endlessly on the internet, just honest, down-to-earth conversations with those who really know what they are talking about.
Overall it was a fantastic event that opened up a lot of eyes to new and interesting career goals, and most importantly how to achieve them.
